Resilient Virginia’s Biennial Resilience Conference brings together leaders, practitioners, and community partners from across the Commonwealth to turn shared challenges into collective action. The conference sparks statewide momentum by breaking down silos, strengthening local capacity, and elevating proven, community-led approaches that can be adapted and replicated across regions. Through lasting connections and cross-sector collaboration, the conference helps build Virginia’s ability to adapt, respond, and thrive—long after the event concludes. The next Biennial Resilience Conference will take place in 2027.

2025 Resilient Virginia Conference

The 2025 Resilient Virginia Conference accelerated resilience action across the Commonwealth by equipping communities with practical tools, shared strategies, and lasting connections. Participants gained insights into emerging policy, research, and funding opportunities while learning directly from peers implementing solutions on the ground.

Through keynote, plenary, breakout, and hands-on workshop sessions, the conference strengthened local capacity, broke down silos, and elevated proven approaches to climate adaptation, equitable resilience planning, resilient infrastructure, and community health. By fostering cross-sector collaboration and peer exchange, the 2025 conference helped spark community-led change and advance resilience efforts that continue well beyond the event.

2023 Resilient Virginia Conference

The 2023 Resilient Virginia Conference showcased how businesses and communities can work together to strengthen resilience while advancing economic, health, and equity outcomes. The conference highlighted strategies from urban and rural communities for assessing climate risk, responding to extreme weather, and building resilience in the face of ongoing climate challenges that affect community vitality. Discussions also underscored the transformative opportunity created by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Inflation Reduction Act, which are catalyzing new investments in clean energy, infrastructure resilience, and workforce development across the Commonwealth.

2021 Resilient Virginia Conference
The 2021 Resilient Virginia Conference convened participants virtually over three days to explore pathways toward a more resilient and equitable clean economy. 2019 Resilient Virginia Conference
The 2019 Resilient Virginia Conference convened leaders from across the Commonwealth on July 18–19 at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business to explore how rural and urban communities can work together to build a more resilient future. Centered on the theme Connecting Rural and Urban Communities for a Resilient Future, the conference examined shared challenges—from extreme weather and climate change to economic, health, and security concerns—while highlighting opportunities for collaboration across sectors. 2018 Resilient Virginia Conference
The 2018 Resilient Virginia Rural Resiliency Forum, held on October 23 at the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton, brought together public, private, and academic stakeholders to strengthen the resilience and prosperity of Virginia’s rural communities. The forum focused on the interconnected areas of resilient agriculture and forestry, green and blue infrastructure, hazard mitigation and disaster preparedness, and integrating resiliency into planning. Participants explored strategies to enhance collaboration, leverage existing resources, and advance practical actions, while informing state-level policies to support rural communities in facing economic, environmental, and social challenges.

2017 Resilient Virginia Conference

The 2017 Resilient Virginia Conference, themed Connecting Communities, Business, and Educators for Resilience Solutions, built on the inaugural conference’s goals of expanding the state’s capacity for resiliency planning. Supported by the office of Virginia Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security Brian Moran and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, the conference brought together business leaders, educators, government officials, and community representatives to share strategies, explore regional resiliency priorities, and develop practical tools for action. Through plenary sessions, workshops, and networking opportunities, participants gained insights to strengthen resiliency planning across both public and private sectors throughout Virginia.

2016 Resilient Virginia Conference

The 2016 Resilient Virginia Conference, held March 22–23 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center, was the Commonwealth’s first statewide convening focused on building resilience. Bringing together community leaders, business stakeholders, and government representatives, the conference explored strategies to address environmental, social, and economic challenges while equipping participants to lead resiliency efforts in their communities. Through plenary sessions, workshops, and case studies, attendees examined topics ranging from national security and infrastructure risks to agricultural resilience, emergency preparedness, and the business case for planning. The conference also highlighted progress on state initiatives, including the Virginia Climate Change and Resiliency Update Commission’s recommendations and the Clean Power Plan.
